Special Needs Kitty Searching for an Owner
Meet Barbie. She is a 5 year old Himalayan cat who was recently surrendered to the shelter. Barbie was living in a loving home for 1 year with dogs and a 20 year old cat. Recently in the last two weeks the 20 year old cat began attacking her to the point she was drawing blood. Barbie is front declawed and unable to defend herself, so the owner thought it better for her to find a new owner where she was not in jeopardy of being injured, despite how much she loves her and will miss her. Barbie is a special needs girl because she is potentially Feline Aids Positive. She was said to have received the aids vaccine (which will always make a cat test positive) but there is no record to verify. This is not contagious to people or other dogs but if she is truly + she will need a home with no other cats or a very old cat like in her last home. Barbie is very quiet and sweet, gets along great with all other animals and people. She is very high maintenance and loves to be brushed and doted over. Her perfect home would be a cat lover who can spend time petting her and telling her how pretty she is. She requires daily brushing and cleaning of her eyes due to her squished face. A loud and noisy house will not be good for her as she will hide and watch from afar. If you want a loving girl and are willing to have her be the only cat in the house, she will be a perfect match for you!
We have some VERY exciting and HUGE news we wanted to announce of some of our plans to better our adoption center in the New Year. This year we adopted out 1759 pets-almost 400 more than last year- making this our best year to date! We wanted to thank all of you for your support, donations, and referrals. We also know that with great success comes great responsibility so we have sat down and discussed how we can give our adopters BETTER service, quality, and a great experience. Thinking of the amount of pets adopted out, we wanted to share with you that we do this with ONLY 20 cat cages and 23 dog kennels. Our building was built over 20 years ago and now it is time for some changes due to our adoption centered mindset. Those of you that have been to our facility have seen our basement- dark, dreary, and in need of major updating. We make do with the kennels, space, and money we have- but we really NEED more room to house the dogs we have coming in and out of our facility. This year we have committed 100% to creating the Scottsville Canine Wellness Center in our unfinished 1500sq ft. basement. Not only is this going to add a valuable square footage, but every out of state animal is going to be entering into a 7-10 day quarantine program in the wellness center prior to adoption. This is going to help better serve our dogs and also our adopters with health and temperament questions/concerns! Like every place in our adoption center, this wellness center will be open to the public where you can view the animals before adoption and submit an application. Each transport will have a designated day that pets are ‘released’ for adoption where you can pick up your new pet at the day/time specified. We are hoping to have many of the pets “pre” adopted out to people whose applications have been approved.
As always, we cannot do this without your help. We have had the contractors down and this reno is going to cost us $60,000- due to demolition and excavation of the current concrete structure and foundation, painting, new flooring, renovation of our mom room and laundry room, additional kennels, a treatment room, new lighting system for better viewing, windows, and a $2,000 air exchange system that will be taking fresh air from outside inside and expelling the old air out; this system also heats/cools the fresh air coming into the building according to the current temperatures. This is going to provide our new “waiting” animals the best in care and comfort! WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF DONORS to help us make this necessary change happen. We have come up with sponsorship levels where anyone who donates $100 and over will receive a name plate that will be hung on a large commemorative plaque in the new Wellness Center for all to see. Also if anyone has corporate sponsors/businesses looking for a place to donate to, PLEASE recommend having them donate to this cause. All the money given is 100% tax deductible and you will receive a donation card for your tax purposes. We know this seems like an impossible figure (as we are taken back by it ourselves) but together we can make this happen! Feedback, ideas, events, etc. are welcomed!
